Art in Italy
A Painting Workshop in Tuscany
September 18-28, 2008

Take a journey with us on a unique art adventure. Visit historical villages and cultural sites, relax in the Tuscan countryside, get inspired, and paint. Florence, San Gimignano, Siena, the Chianti Hills, and more!

The September 2008 Painting Workshop in Tuscany combines an opportunity to be inspired by some of Italy’s greatest Renaissance art with the serenity of painting in rural Italy. We will meet in Florence and spend two nights at a hotel in the cultural heart of the city. We will tour historic sites and museums in Florence, including the renaissance art of the Uffizi. Then we will set out for a medieval village in Tuscany. We will stay at an estate in a farmhouse on a hill surrounded by cypress trees, vineyards and olive groves. We will paint the grounds that overlook the countryside and take day trips to Siena, San Gimignano, and the Chianti Hills. The trip includes five painting workshops with Teresa Smith, nationally recognized watercolor artist. For those interested in deepening their knowledge of wine production, we will also have a guided tour of the estate’s historical buildings, cellars and the barriques, complete with wine tastings.

About the Estate:

Casa Sola is a 120 hectare farm located near the town of Barberino Val d'Elsa, 30 Km from Florence and 28 Km from Siena, in the heart of the Chianti Classico area. It is a working farm that produces quality wines and olive oil in the ancient tradition. Two historical farmhouses, recently restored, sit on facing and equidistant hills. We will stay at Montarsiccio where there are six apartments, all with independent entrances, built on two floors in order to guarantee more privacy. They are elegantly furnished with old country-style furniture, cozy and comfortable, with their own gardens and private verandas. A covered painting area will provide an inspirational gathering place. Creeping grape vines cover the stone walls and change color with the seasons. Flowers cascade and bushes of aromatic herbs bloom on each veranda of the six apartments. All around a great cypress woods surrounds the hill. In each of the six apartments, some aspects of the typical rural Tuscan architecture were deliberately maintained, such as the old fiddle and the so called living-fireplace where in the past families of farmers used to sit and chat at the end of their hard working days.
